What is Threads?
Threads is a new app developed by Instagram, which is owned by Meta (formerly known as Facebook). It is positioned as a real-time, public conversation app that aims to create an open and friendly space for communities. As a companion app to Instagram, Threads is designed to boost Instagram's functionality and user experience.
To use Threads, users are currently required to have an Instagram account. The app is closely integrated with Instagram, and users must use their Instagram handle as their Threads username. Additionally, users have the option to import their Instagram follow list directly into Threads. Verified users on Instagram will also be verified on Threads. Users can choose to set their Threads account as private or public, depending on their preferences.
The launch of Threads intensifies the competition between Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, and Elon Musk, who purchased Twitter. With Meta's financial backing and Instagram's massive user base of over two billion monthly active users worldwide, Threads enters the market with significant potential to challenge Twitter's dominance. However, it remains to be seen how the app will fare in the highly competitive social media landscape.
- Character Limits: Threads allows users to compose posts of up to 500 characters, while Twitter imposes a character limit of 280 for unverified users, encouraging concise sharing .
- Video Length: Threads allows users to share videos up to five minutes long, surpassing Twitter's limit of two minutes and 20 seconds for non-verified users.
- Integration with Instagram: Threads seamlessly integrates with Instagram, requiring users to have an Instagram account and allowing them to import bio information and followers. Deleting a Threads account also necessitates deleting the associated Instagram profile.
- Likes Viewing: Threads does not offer a dedicated tab for exploring the likes of other profiles, distinguishing itself from Twitter's separate tab for viewing likes.
- Advertisement Presence: Threads initially launches without advertisements, providing an uninterrupted experience for users and fostering engagement.
- Posting Process: Initiating a thread on Threads involves pressing the enter key three times, whereas Twitter uses a plus button to begin composing a tweet or thread.
- Social Controls: Threads aligns with Instagram's content rules and offers robust features for muting and blocking accounts to combat harassment and offensive behavior.
Understanding these distinctions allows users to appreciate the unique offerings and functionalities of each platform. Whether one prefers Threads' expanded character limits and video capabilities or Twitter's concise nature and dynamic engagement, both platforms provide distinct opportunities for connection and expression in the evolving social media landscape.
